The Paganism in Our Christianity
Author: Arthur Weigall
It took three centuries after the death of Jesus for Christianity to become an organized religion, at the Council of Nicea in 325 AD. During this formative time it was difficult for Christianity to compete and survive with the many forms of paganism. In order to succeed and draw new converts into the fold, a number of pagan beliefs and ideas were incorporated into the Christian faith.
Today we do not recognize these pagan features, but the author asserts that they are there and points them out in this well researched book. He reveals how this paganism was brought in. Many long standing pagan festivals were incorporated and given significance – for example, Christianity had abolished the Hebrew Sabbath of Saturday so made Sunday their day of worship, partly because it was the day of the resurrection, but largely because it was the weekly festival of the sun for its main competing rival, Mithraism. Also, December 25th was the birthday of the sun-god, Mithra, so this date was brought in and called “Christmas,” with full knowledge that Jesus was not born on this day. These are facts.
Many more are covered such as the influence of pagan gods, the trinity, miraculous occurrences, the composition of the New Testament, the resurrection, the doctrine of atonement, and much more. The author believes Christianity should be what its name infers – based on the teachings of Christ, and not derived from other sources. This book should be read by every interested Christian or student of the history of religions.

Crux Ansata
Subtitle: An Indictment of the Roman Catholic Church
Author: H.G. Wells
Besides writing science fiction like The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man, Wells was interested in history and current events. This was written during World War II, after he had resigned as Minister of Allied Propaganda. While there he learned things that shocked him concerning the Roman Catholic Church. Much of what he found is in this book. After it was released a loud protest came from the Catholic press accusing Wells, a respected writer, of spreading half truths, innuendoes, and logical fallacies. He responded, saying the church routinely engages in a complex, modern boycott of liberal thought that requires us to fight this intolerance. This book was swept under the rug of history despite its respected author.

GOD THE INVISIBLE KING
Author: H. G. Wells
A good overview of God apart from religion. It is an effort to transmit the truest conception of God possible. Most religions claim God for them- selves in an exclusionary fashion – you must be a follower of the chosen faith before He will accept you into his kingdom. Wells rejects this view and believes that any man or woman who accepts God’s love as one person connecting to their own creator, is fine. An intermediary, despite religious claims, is not necessary. We are all God’s children. We are all seeking the same God, so to be dogmatic within a certain faith is small-minded and petty. If you want to explore an expanded view of God, then this book is for you.

ARADIA: Or the Gospel of the Witches
Author: Charles Leland
This first edition reprint tells how the author met a woman in Italy in the 1800’s. She revealed to him Strega, or the Old Religion, which had its roots in religions that pre-dated Christianity.
An important book for modern Wiccans, with a great impact upon its beliefs. Gives anyone with an interest in religions what some of the more ancient beliefs may have been in earlier times. Also one of the standard texts for Wiccans. An important document called the Charge of the Goddess was taken from this book, although not named so here. An essential Wiccan/pagan text.

The Malleus Maleficarum
Author: Heinrich Kramer and James Sprenger
One of the most notorious books in history.
Thousands of innocent people, especially women, lost their lives at its expense. First published around 1489, shortly after the invention of the printing press and five years after a papal bull was issued legitimizing the belief in witches. It went through at least 30 printings and became the handbook for witch hunters, both Protestant and Catholic. Bishops and secular authorities could prosecute witches if there were no representatives from the Inquisition around, with this book giving full directions. Some villages were left with as few as two women. This book should be read because there are lessons to be learned and there is an ignorance to overcome. A fascinating study of mass hysteria, greed, and delusional behavior that has not completely vanished from our society.

Compendium Maleficarum
Subtitle: A Handbook on Witchcraft from the 1600’s
Author: Francesco Maria Guazzo
Edited: Montague Summers
Were witches real in the Middle Ages?
This handbook on witchcraft, first published in 1628, claims to expose the entire practice and profession of witchcraft. Was used as support in the accusation of witches at the time, although we can recognize much of it today as being paranoid superstition by religious authorities. The book is valuable because it allows one to view the extreme superstition surrounding witchcraft at the time, and to better understand the degree of persecution that resulted.
